Angkor Wat

We headed out today with our driver to see some of the temples. We started with Angkor Thom and Bayon. The area around these temples is massive, lush and very green. The structures themselves need to be seen to be explained. Apparently most of the bricks were made quite small and then glued together with vegetable sap and gum which makes them quite strong. Tree roots can be seen in some of the walls around the temples and in the gates.

After another few smaller temples we headed to Ta Prohm, if any of you have seen Tomb Raider you will know where I am talking about. There is a massive tree that has grown through part of the temple that is world famous. There is no inside like the movie, I think we can leave that to Hollywood. Needless to say, it is the one of the main reasons that I wanted to visit Cambodia and it did not disapoint! We may even head back there tomorrow as I would love to just wander round this jungle aimlessly for hours.

After lunch at a local restaurant and a lot of water we headed to Angkor Wat. This place is amazing, it gives you vertigo just looking at the steps that you have to climb to get to the top. There were a lot of people here and this is not peak season so I am not sure what it would be like in the more popular months. There were also many monks around as it is a pilgramige that they make to the site which was originally made to Vishna for the Hindu's and then at some stage over time was replaced by Budda.

Our only misfortune today has been that it is clouded over so we did not get to see sunset. Our driver will collect us tomorrow at 5am and we will head out to what we hope will be sunrise (clouds permitting)

I am also having a slight issue with the digital camera...memory space...I have taken 180 photos today...how are those sweeps going? No comments from the peanut gallery please. I am just about to head upstairs and go through them to see which ones I can delete. Am also seriously thinking I need another 2 - 4 gig of memory.

And the food is amazing! We have been having dinner at our guesthouse, authentic Khmer food that is just wonderful. The pineapple shakes (pineapple with ice) have become my new favourite drink in the warmer weather.

I am off, best get to bed. Ciao for now kiddies.
